Baseball Picks Up 5-1 Win at Miami (Ohio)

CINCINNATI - After scoring three insurance runs, one in each of the last three innings, the Xavier baseball team picked up the 5-1 win at Miami (Ohio) Wednesday night at Hayden Park. Sophomore Ben Thomas went 3-for-5, including a two-run shot in the first, and also collected the win after tossing five innings.
Junior Bobby Freking also sent a ball over the fence, a solo home run in the seventh and four other Musketeers tallied a hit as well in the contest.
With two outs and a man on first, Thomas sent his eighth home run of the season on the third pitch his saw to score what would be the winning run.
Miami (20-16) got a run back in the second when Ryan Curl's RBI single plated Brad Gschwind for the RedHawks only run of the game.
Xavier (21-15) score a run in each of the last three innings to put the game away. Freking led off the seventh with a long ball, his second home run of the season, and senior Neil Lindgren was able to score in the eighth on a costly RedHawk error. To end the ninth, senior Billy O'Conner stole home for the last run of the game.
Thomas (1-1) got the win for the Musketeers after throwing five complete innings. He struck out four and walked five, giving up one run on four hits. Junior Zac Richard threw an inning of relief followed by sophomore Brian Muransky for two frames. Senior Jordan Conley closed out the game for the Musketeers.
Spencer Nelson (0-2) took the loss for the RedHawks after putting one inning. He struck out one while walking one and gave up two runs on one hit.
The Musketeers return to action this weekend with a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Temple. First pitch on Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
