Temple Bests Baseball, 13-9, in Series Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Xavier baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning but it was not enough as the Musketeers fell, 13-9, to the Temple Owls at TU's Skip Wilson Field Friday evening in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the loss, XU moves to 21-16 overall and 8-8 in A-10 action while TU improves to 16-20 on the season and 10-5 in conference games.
Six Musketeers recorded two-hits games on the day while four scored two runs apiece as well. Senior Steve Brown was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI, including a two-run blast in the second inning.
Xavier started strong in the contest, scoring four runs in the second inning to take the early 4-0 lead. Senior Jordan Conley single to set up Brown's two-run homer and with two outs, sophomore John McCambridge reached on a single to right field but advanced to second on an Owl fielding error. After stealing his team-best 27th base of the year, McCambridge made it home on a bunt single by senior Adam Pasono. Senior Billy O'Conner was at the plate next and Pasono moved into scoring position after stealing second. O'Conner followed with a two-out RBI single to center to enable Pasono to reach home four XU's fourth run of the inning.
Temple got a run back in the second but would take over the lead in the third with a grand slam from Tony Jusino. The Owls would score another run in the fourth as well to go up by two, 6-4.
In the fifth the Musketeers would score one more as junior Drew Schmidt collected an RBI off his single to right field. Pasono, who had stolen another base to reach second, made it around to home to cut the Temple lead to one, 6-5.
Unfortunately, the Owls would score three in both the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach. The Musketeers rallied in the ninth, scoring four runs off seven hits but in the end Temple would take the 13-9 victory and the one-game lead in the weekend series.
Junior Danny Rosenbaum (3-4) took the loss for the Musketeers after throwing five innings and facing two batters in the sixth. He gave up eight earn runs on 12 hits and struck out four batters while walking one. Sophomore Brian Muransky and freshmen Shane Liska and Tyler Koors all saw action from the pen.
Ben White (3-3) got the win for the Owls as he threw eight innings plus two batters in the ninth. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and fanned seven while walking one.
Xavier and Temple return to action Saturday, April 25, at Skip Wilson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
