CINCINNATI - Juniors Ta'Shia Phillips and Amber Harris each posted a double-double as the No. 10 Xavier women's basketball 74-49 win over intrastate rival Dayton at Cintas Center Saturday night. The Musketeers remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 action with the win, improving to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in A-10 play while the Flyers fall to 16-5 for the season and 4-2 in conference action.
Harris led all scorers with 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds and four assists. Ta'Shia Phillips tallied 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Freshman Katie Rutan also recorded 16 points in the contest for the Musketeers as she went 5-for-6 from behind the arc.
Dayton came out shooting in the second half, rattling off six straight points but a layup by Dee Dee Jernigan squashed the Flyer momentum as XU held a 35-26 lead. The Musketeers built on the margin as Rutan continued to be hot from beyond the three-point arc, completing a four-point play after being fouled late in the second half. Xavier found itself holding its largest lead, 30, at 66-36 with just over 4:30 remaining in the contest. XU coasted the rest of the way, getting the 74-49 win.
The Musketeers jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open the game and never looked back. An 8-0 run, including back-to-back three-point baskets from Rutan, late in the first half gave XU its largest margin of the frame at 14, 31-17. The Flyers found themselves in foul trouble early as six players tallied two fouls apiece in the first frame.
Ta'Shia Phillips had already posted a double-double by the end of the first half as she had 11 points and 11 rebounds at the break. The Musketeers headed into intermission with the 33-20 advantage.
The Flyers were led by Kristin Daugherty with 13 points, the only Dayton player to score in double-digits. Justine Raterman was the Flyers leading rebounder with six.
The Musketeers return to action on Feb. 3 when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington at 7 p.m.
