PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Senior Carly Wenzel scored the "golden goal" in the second overtime period to give the Xavier women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Temple Sunday afternoon. Wenzel's goal came in the 103rd minute when she put a long free kick into the back of the net for the win.
Xavier (7-8-0, 3-3 A-10) was posted 13 shots on the day with Wenzel leading the way with three. Temple (6-9-0, 2-4-0 A-10) earned 15 shots on the day with Nikki Conn posting seven strikes.
"Today's match could have gone either way," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "I thought Temple played very well, especially in the first half. Our transformation into a team that never gives up was on display today. Going into the second overtime our players were talking about refusing to accept a tie. We were fortunate that Carly (Wenzel) struck a great free kick at the end of the game."
Wenzel's three shots included not only the game-winning goal but a strike in the second half that bounced off of the crossbar. Sophomore Brett Sweeney almost gave XU the lead in the second half as well with a header that bounced off the post.
Sophomore Jennifer Perri and senior Jenny Rosen split goalkeeping responsibilities once again and combined for a shutout. Rosen earned the win and one save in nearly 58 minutes of action. Perri pulled down four saves in the first half.
Temple starter played the entire match and earned six saves.
The Musketeers will continue the Atlantic 10 campaign Friday, October 22 at St. Bonaventure. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
