CINCINNATI - Redshirt senior Neil Lindgren's first home run of the season proved to be the winning run Friday evening as the Xavier baseball team got past visiting Oakland, 6-5, at Hayden Field. Freshman Daniel Rod went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Musketeers offensively.
Also for the Musketeers, junior John McCambridge also tallied two hits and junior Phil Bauer extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the second inning.
Xavier (3-13) and Oakland (2-7) were nearly even in the hits column with the Grizzlies edging the Musketeers, 11-10. OU committed three errors in the contest to XU's one miscue.
Tied at five runs a piece in the bottom of the seventh, Lindgren was up with one out and looking at a full count. On the pay-off pitch, the right fielder went yard, sending the ball over the left field fence to score the winning run and giving the Musketeers their first home victory of the young season.
Sophomore Josh Deeg (1-0) got the win on the mound for the Musketeers as he tossed the last 2.2 innings of the game. He gave up no ones on only one hit and struck out three while walking one. Starter redshirt sophomore Nate Mutsch put in 6.2 innings of work, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits and striking out two while walking two.
Matt LaMonthe (1-3) took the loss for the Grizzlies as he threw 6.2 innings giving up five earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked two. Kevin Korkate finished out the game for OU, tossing 1.1 innings.
The Musketeers and Grizzlies will wrap up their three-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Hayden Field. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
