Indiana Bests Baseball, 17-8, in Midweek Matchup

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Xavier baseball team fell 17-8 at Indiana's Sembower Field Wednesday evening in an offensive shootout. Two Musketeers tallied three hits on the day as the two teams combined for 34 hits in the contest.
Junior Ben Thomas went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and classmate Phil Bauer also recorded three hits on the day and scored a run as well.
Indiana (10-10) knocked out two homers to open the game but XU was able to tie the contest at two apiece in the top of the third. Redshirt sophomore Matt Kleifges collected an RBI on a fielder's choice, bringing home redshirt senior Neil Lindgren, and Thomas scored on a junior Ryan Bellamy's base hit. The Hoosiers racked up seven more runs over the next three innings and held the 9-2 advantage heading into the sixth.
Xavier (4-16) got two runs back in both the sixth and seventh innings. Freshman Patrick Paligraf got to third on a fielder's choice and was able to make it home on an Indiana error and with senior Drew Schmidt on second, Lindgren doubled to bring him home as well in the sixth. In the next inning, Paligraf was at the plate with the bases loaded and his extra base hit to left sent in Bellamy and Bauer cutting IU's lead to three, 9-6.
The Hoosiers came up big in the bottom of the seventh, putting up five runs in the inning. The Musketeers scored two more in the eighth but the deficit was too much and Indiana capped off its big offensive day with three more runs in the eighth to take the 17-8 victory.
Freshman Markus Kuykendoll (0-3) took the loss for the Musketeers after throwing 3.2 innings. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and walked three. Freshman Seth Willoughby put in two and a third innings of work while redshirt sophomore Josh Murphy and redshirt sophomore Alex Vice each added one inning.
Jonny Hoffman got the win for the Hoosiers, throwing 4.2 innings in the contest. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and struck out one and walked one.
The Hoosiers were led offensively by Jerrud Sabourin who was 5-for-6 with five runs scored and four RBI.
The Musketeers open the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule this weekend with a three-game set at Saint Louis. XU and SLU will square off on Friday, March 26 at 7 p.m.
