Baseball Downs Richmond, 10-6, With Four-Run Eighth

RICHMOND, Va. - Sitting knotted at six runs apiece in the seventh, Xavier baseball used a four-run eighth to down Atlantic 10 foe Richmond, 10-6, Friday evening at UR's Pitt Field. Nine Musketeers recorded a hit in the contest.
Senior Bobby Freking led the Musketeers offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Drew Schmidt also tallied multiple RBI on the day, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.
Richmond (12-12, 1-3 A-10) struck first, putting up two runs in the first inning. With a runner on first, Mike Mergenthaler sent a long ball over the center field fence to pick up two RBI and give the Spiders the early 2-0 advantage. UR had a big fourth inning as well, scoring four runs on four hits and three Musketeer errors. Heading into the top of the fifth, Richmond held the 6-0 lead.
Xavier (6-19, 2-2 A-10) answered with a three-run fifth to cut the Richmond lead in half. Schmidt stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and brought home XU's first run of the game with his sacrifice fly out. Junior Ben Thomas used his base hit to send freshman Patrick Paligraf across home and junior John McCambridge scored when Freking doubled down the left line.
The Musketeers got another run in the sixth when junior Ryan Bellamy went yard for his first home run of the season and the second of his career. XU was able to tie the game in the seventh as senior Zac Richard singled
Heading into the eighth, Xavier and Richmond were tied at six runs apiece. Redshirt senior Neil Lindgren was able to score on a throwing error as McCambridge reached first on the play. Paligraf and McCambridge were brought home by Schmidt who collected two RBI with a double to left. Freking followed with a single to right, scoring Schmidt, and the Musketeers took the 10-6 lead, which would prove to be the final margin.
Freshman Seth Willoughby (1-0) got his first collegiate win for the Musketeers as he tossed the final 5.2 scoreless innings of the contest. He gave up only two hits and struck out five while walking two. Sophomore Josh Deeg got the start for XU, throwing 3.1 innings.
Jay Joines (0-2) took the loss for the Spiders after giving up two earned runs on three hits. The Spiders had two players with multiple hits, including Derek Boliek who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Musketeers and Spiders continue their series Saturday, April 3 with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at UR's Pitt Field.
