KINGSTON, R.I. - With bad weather threatening, the Xavier baseball team split its doubleheader at Rhode Island Saturday, falling 3-2 in the first game and taking the nightcap, 7-6. In the win, the Musketeers used two home runs to overcome a one-run deficit.
For the Musketeers, Senior Bobby Freking went 4-for-8 with three runs and three RBI on the day while senior Drew Schmidt was 2-for-4 with two RBI and four walks. Junior Ben Thomas had three hits and led the team with 25 putouts on the day.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first game of the day, Xavier (14-27, 8-7 A-10) put together a rally in the sixth as junior Ryan Bellamy blasted a two-run shot to left field, his third homer of the season, bringing Freking. The Musketeers threatened again in the seventh as junior Phil Bauer made it around to third but the inning ended before he could make it home. The Rams were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Freshman Jon Richard (6-3) took the loss for the Musketeers while Ken Gravline (5-2) picked up the win and Gardner Leaver tallied the save.
After the Musketeers put up a run in the second inning of the nightcap, Rhode Island (20-18, 9-6 A-10) took over the lead with a two-spot in the bottom of the inning. A four-run fourth gave XU the lead back until URI scored two runs in both the six and seventh to retake the advantage, 6-5.
With the game on the line, Schmidt led off the ninth with a home run to center, his first long ball of the year, to knot the game at six apiece. After a Musketeer fly out, Thomas followed with a homer to right field, his fifth of 2010, to give XU the go-ahead run. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Musketeers left the Rams' Tom Coulombe at the plate looking as XU claimed the 7-6 win.
Seth Willoughby (2-1) was credited with the win for XU and Leaver was charged with the loss (1-3).
The Rams were led by Mike LeBel who recorded four hits, two RBI and two runs scored on the day.
The Musketeers return to action with a home-and-away series next week with Cincinnati. XU will host the Bearcats on Tuesday, April 27 with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field.
