CINCINNATI - After taking a four-run lead, the visiting Miami (Ohio) RedHawks outlasted Xavier baseball, 5-3, Tuesday evening at XU's Hayden Field. Senior Zac Richard went 3-for-4 with a run scored to go along with a game-high 10 putouts to lead the Musketeers.
Also for the Musketeers, junior Phil Bauer also had a multiple-hit day as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored as well.
Miami (12-15) got on the board first after putting up a run in the second and two more in the third to go up three, 3-0. The Musketeers got a run back in the third as junior Ben Thomas' sacrifice fly out plated freshman Patrick Paligraf.
The RedHawks scored two more in the fourth to take the 5-1 advantage and the score remained unchanged until the bottom of the seventh. Xavier (7-21) cut the lead to two, 5-3, with two runs in the inning when Zac Richard scored on a base hit from junior Ryan Bellamy and Bauer scored on a ground out by Paligraf. Miami held on for the two-run victory.
Lance Kingrey (1-0) got the win for the RedHawks as he was the pitcher of record when Miami took the lead it never relinquished. He tossed one inning striking out one and walking one while giving up one hit.
Redshirt sophomore Nate Mutsch (0-4) took the loss for the Musketeers after putting in 2.2 innings of work. He gave up three runs on four hits and struck out three while walking one. Thomas saw his first action of the season on the mound for XU, throwing 2.1 innings - he gave up one earned run on two hits and struck out two.
The Musketeers return to action tomorrow with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, to play one at Ohio State. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium.
