Ohio State Defeats Baseball, 12-7, in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Xavier baseball team dropped a 12-7 decision at Ohio State University Wednesday night at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium. Four Musketeers tallied multiple hit games, including redshirt freshman Mark Elwell who went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead XU.
Also for the Musketeers, junior Phil Bauer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored on the day and freshman Seth Willoughby went recorded two hits in four plate appearances, scoring a run and collecting an RBI. Junior Ben Thomas also had multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Xavier (7-22) put up the first run of the contest in the first inning when senior Bobby Freking's sacrifice fly out plated senior Drew Schmidt. In the bottom of the inning, the Buckeyes' Drew sent a three-run homer over the right center fence to put OSU up, 3-1.
The Musketeers had a big second inning, scoring four runs as Bauer led off with a double to right center. Elwell moved Bauer to third after reaching first on an error on the Buckeyes' short stop. Willoughby collected his RBI with a base hit as Bauer scored and junior John McCambridge's single plated Elwell. With runners at first and second, Schmidt reached on another OSU error allowing Willoughby to reach home and McCambridge scored on a base hit by Thomas. Heading into the bottom of the second, XU held a 5-3 lead.
Ohio State (17-8) got a run back in the second but Xavier answered with one in the third. With the Musketeers holding the 6-4 advantage, the Buckeyes scored a single run in the bottom of the third as well. After going scoreless in the top of the fourth, XU relinquished its lead in the bottom of the inning when OSU plated to runners with a solo home run and a single to left.
A four-run fifth for the Buckeyes put the game out of reach for the Musketeers and OSU headed into the final inning with a six-run lead, 12-6. Xavier rallied in the ninth as redshirt sophomore Dan Rinck made the best of his pinch hit with a base hit to center and redshirt sophomore Matt Kleifges was followed with a walk. Elwell singled to load the bases and Rinck scored XU's last run of the game when freshman Seth Dawes was walked. THe Buckeyes ended the contest with a fielder's choice and took the 12-7 win.
Freshman Jake Clear (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Musketeers after throwing 1.2 innings. Senior Zac Richard started the game for XU, tossing three innings and giving up two earned runs on seven hits.
McKinney (2-3) got the win for the Buckeyes after putting in four innings of scoreless middle relief. He gave up four hits, struck out one and walked one.
The Musketeers return home this weekend for their Atlantic 10 home opening series against the La Salle Explorers. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday at Hayden Field. Admission is free.
