LAS VEGAS - In its first match of the UNLV Classic, the Xavier volleyball team dispatched the San Jose State Spartans, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-16). Senior Shannon Voors led the Musketeers with 14 kills while sophomore Alex Smith hit at a blistering .818 with nine kills and four assisted blocks.
Also for the Musketeers, sophomore Stephanie Vorherr got under a team-high 18 digs and senior Claire Paszkiewicz set 39 assists. Junior Kathryn Traut tallied seven kills and three assisted blocks as well.
"We're getting better at learning to keep our composure and that showed up in our ability to keep the ball on the court in tough situations," commented head coach Mike Johnson following the match. "We've been working on discipline and we're improving in that area. The exciting thing is we still have room to grow."
Xavier (6-4) came out firing, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage recording four blocks on its first six points. San Jose State (4-7) cut the lead to three but the Musketeers stretched it back out to five, 10-5, on the strength of an assisted block by Smith and Paszkiewicz. XU held control of the set the rest of the way, forcing a Spartan timeout at 20-14, and out of the break senior Chelsea Campbell slammed home a kill.
Back-to-back service aces set up the Musketeers for set-point and a kill from Voors gave XU the game, 25-14. Traut led the way with five kills in the frame while Smith tallied two blocks.
Vorherr served up an ace in the second set to give XU the 7-2 advantage but SJSU got back in the game with a kill and block. The Musketeer lead was nine, 20-11, when the Spartans called for a break. Out of the timeout, San Jose State pulled to within six a couple of times until a tip by Smith gave Xavier the 25-18 set win and the two-game lead in the match. Voors recorded eight kills in the second set for the Musketeers.
The third set was never in question as the Musketeers rattled off three straight to open the frame. Back-to-back service aces by Campbell gave XU the 15-6 lead, capping a 5-0 Musketeer run. A kill from Voors gave Xavier an 11-point advantage, 18-7, but San Jose State was able to pull within six, 20-14, after a 4-0 run. The Musketeers held match-point at 24-16 and took the set on a Spartan service error to take the match, 3-0.
The Spartans were led by Brianna Amian with eight kills while Katie Turner was SJSU's leading passer with 11 digs.
The Musketeers return to action on Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. (PT) match versus Cal State Northridge. XU will wrap up play at the UNLV Classic on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (PT) with a contest against the host Rebels.
