EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Xavier women's soccer team saw its winning streak end at two matches as the Evansville Purple Aces topped the Musketeers 2-0 at McCutchen Stadium Friday evening. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 4-4-0 on the season while Evansville improved to 2-5-1.
The teams were locked in a 0-0 tie at the half but the Aces managed to take the lead right out of the gate in the second frame on a header from Lauren Tiernan at the 45:55 mark. The Aces struck again in the 48th minute when Casey Cartwright got a shot past XU goalkeeper Jennifer Perri.
"Tonight was the most disappointing 50 minutes of soccer we have played," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "Give Evansville credit for taking advantage of that. Our defensive organization will need to be better for us to have success. The last 40 minutes we were pretty good but its tough to dig out of a 2 goal hole on the road"
The Musketeers and Aces each had 13 shots on the day with freshman Mariah Whitaker leading the way for XU with four shots. Junior Jessica Brooks finished second on the night for XU with three shots.
Perri finished the match with six saves in her eight straight complete game.
The Musketeers will have a chance to get back in the win column Sunday as they host cross-town rival Cincinnati at 1 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex.
