CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's soccer team fought hard but fell in a heartbreaker to cross-town rival Cincinnati 1-0 Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers (4-5-0) held the Bearcats (6-2-1) scoreless for the first 45 minutes but a curving corner kick by Emily Hebbeler in the 63rd minute managed to find the back of the net and gave the Bearcats the edge.
"It was an outstanding effort today against an opponent who was better on the day," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "In the defensive third we were 100 percent better than Friday night. We knew we were probably not going to be able to create a ton of chances against Cincinnati, but we did give ourselves a few opportunities to tie the game. We look forward to a two week break before Atlantic 10 play starts."
It was a tough defensive battle for the Musketeers as the Bearcats got off 22 shots in the match. Xavier goalkeeper Jennifer Perri managed to save four shots on the game while the rest of the Musketeer defense posted six team saves.
Jessica Brooks led the Muskteers in shots with two and four other Musketeers each chipped in a shot each. The Bearcats were led in shooting by Julie Morrissey with seven strikes on the day.
Bearcat goalkeeper Rachel Barnette eared two saves on the day while the Bearcats' defense posted one team save.
The Musketeers will take a two week break from regular season play. XU will host an alumni game on Saturday September 25 at 2p.m. The Musketeers open A-10 play Friday, October 1 as they host La Salle at 7 p.m.
