COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team proved to be too much for Xavier as they handed the Musketeers a 7-0 loss Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 0-2 on the season while OSU improved to 2-0.
"All in all I felt everybody played hard and put together a good effort," said XU head coach Eric Toth. "Ohio State makes it so hard for you. They are among the best of the best in our sport. Ball State will be a good barometer for where our team is at in the early part of this season. They are a really good team and we will have to be at our competitive best to win."
Senior Bobby Deye fell to No. 63 Chase Buchanan 6-0, 6-1 in the top singles match. Freshman Jimmy Roebker fought hard but eventually fell to the No. 7 ranked Blaz Rola 6-1, 6-2 in the second singles match.
Sophomore Brandon MacDonald fell at the hands of No. 68 Peter Kobelt in the No. 3 slot while No. 46 Balazs Novak defeated Patrick Bandy in the No. 5 singles match.
In doubles action the highly ranked Buckeyes swept the Musketeers. The No. 6 ranked duo of Rola and Buchanan defeated Deye and fellow senior Brian Starr 8-2 in the first doubles match. No. 25 Devin McCarthy and Novak held off Philip Diaz and Marc Pretorius 8-1.
The XU men will return to action Saturday, January 29 as they travel to Ball State for a 1 p.m. contest. For the latest news and notes on XU tennis return to GoXavier.com.
