Xavier Women Fall 2-1 At Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. -- The Xavier women's soccer team jumped out to an lead early in the second half two goals by Atlantic 10 rival Forham midway through the second period proved to be the deciding factor as XU fell at Fordham 2-1. With the loss, XU fell to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improved to 6-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 overall.
"In both of our A-10 matches thus far, we have taken a lead in the second half, only to give up two unanswered goals," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "We have changed the mentality and competitiveness greatly in a year and a half here at Xavier, but we need to be better at closing out games. We generated several great chances late in the game but give Fordham credit, they are an excellent team and protected their lead."
Junior Leslie Boersma finished and assist from fellow junior LeslieTwehues that gave the Musketeers a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. The goal was Boersma's second of the season.
Fordham tied the game in the 65th minute with a goal by Kristina Maksuti, and took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute with a strike by Annie Worden.
Xavier goalkeeper Katie Markesbery posted nine saves in 90 minutes of play. The Musketeers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they travel to La Salle.
