CINCINNATI -- The Xavier men's tennis team's home opener ended in a 5-2 loss at the hands of Cleveland State Friday night at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Center. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 1-5 on the season while the Vikings improved to 5-2.
"Tonight's match was one in which we competed and played very well, but unfortunately, Cleveland State was a little better tonight," said XU head coach Erich Toth. "Just a few points kept us from winning tonight. We need to get over tonight's loss quickly and get ready to play against a solid Austin Peay team tomorrow night."
Despite the loss, the Musketeers did see some bright spots in performances by senior Brian Starr and freshman Mesa Mei. Starr posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matt Ford at No. 6 singles and Mei earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Kris Klepatz at No. 4 singles.
In doubles play the duo of freshman Jimmy Roebker and sophomore Brandon MacDonald posted XU's lone doubles win in the No. 3 match.
The Musketeers face Austin Peay tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Eastern Hills.
