Xavier Drops Second Game In A Row To UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Xavier baseball team allowed five runs in the fifth inning and dropped its second-straight game against UAB, 11-2, Saturday afternoon. The Musketeers fell to 2-3 on the season, while UAB evened its record at 3-3.
Senior John McCambridge went 3-for-4 with a double, stole two bases, and scored twice. Sophomore Seth Willoughby drove in both of the Musketeers' runs.
Jon Richard was the losing pitcher for the Musketeers. The sophomore southpaw went 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs and eight hits. He walked four and struck out none.
Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, after McCambridge scored on Willoughby's groundout. UAB responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the first and second innings to take the lead.
McCambridge pulled the Musketeers even after starting the third inning with a double down the left field line and scoring on Willoughby's fielders' choice. UAB made it 3-2 by scoring a run in the fourth, before opening its lead with a five-run, seven-hit fifth inning.
Richard started the fifth inning but allowed three singles and a double before being lifted. Josh Murphy came into the game and struck out the first batter, but was unable to get out of the inning unscathed. He gave up a double down the line that score two runs and a single that scored another, putting UAB up 8-2 at the time.
The Musketeers only produced four hits in the final six innings. Senior Ben Thomas had two of the Musketeers' eight hits. Phil Bauer, Daniel Rod, and Patrick Paligraf each had one hit.
The Blazers would tack on three more runs in the seventh inning to take the series. Ryan Woolley was the winning pitcher for UAB. He allowed two earned runs over seven innings and struck out two.
The Musketeers look to salvage a win in the series finale Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET at Young Memorial Field.
