RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Xavier men's tennis team was looking for its second straight win Saturday morning at Eastern Kentucky. However, the Colonels managed to protect their home court and defeated the Musketeers 7-0. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 1-4 on the season while EKU improved to 4-2.
The duo of senior Bobby Deye and freshman Jimmy Roebker earned XU's lone win when they defeated Niklas Schroeder and Philip Janz at No. 2 doubles.
"It was not our day today," said Xavier head coach Eric Toth. "Eastern Kentucky has a tremendous, veteran team. They defend and play on their home court exceptionally well, which was on full display today. We could have done a couple of things better, but all in all the effort and desire to win was there, just not up to EKU's standard. We will work on what we need to address this week and be ready for another battle against Cleveland State on Friday."
Sophomore Brandon MacDonald took the first set of his No. 3 singles match, but Janz rallied to win the final two sets and earned a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. Carles Pons dropped his first set to Musketeer senior Brian Starr before finally taking the No. 6 singles match 4-6, 6-4 (10-2).
Xavier will return to action Friday February 11 as they host Cleveland State at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
