Xavier Splits Sunday's Double-Header With Richmond

CINCINNATI -- Xavier split Sunday's Atlantic 10 double-header against Richmond with the Spiders taking game one 7-6 in a 14-inning marathon game to win the series. The Musketeers routed the Spiders 14-1 in game two and improved its record to 18-16 overall and 3-6 in the A-10.
In game one, the Musketeers fell behind early but rallied in the bottom of the eighth with four runs to tie the game at 6-6.
The Spiders would not be denied as they scored a run in the top of the 14th inning to take the 7-6 lead and the win. Nine pitchers saw action between the two teams in the 14-inning battle with XU using five.
Senior reliever Brian Muransky fell to 3-2 with the loss in two innings of action. Sophomore starter Jon Richard pitched seven innings and gave up 10 hits in the no-decision appearance.
In game two, the Musketeers jumped out early with two runs in the bottom of the second and a lone run in the bottom of the third.
Senior first baseman Ben Thomas had a big game offensively in the second game as he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. The senior's first homer came in the bottom of the fourth and brought home fellow senior Ryan Bellamy. The big left hander struck again in the next inning with a lead-off bomb to right field, his 11th homer of the season.
Redshirt freshman Vinny Nittoli earned the win in game two and improved his record to 4-1 on the season. The right hander pitched six innings of one-run baseball and fanned two Spider batters in the win.
The Musketeers return to action Tuesday, April 12, as they travel across town to face Cincinnati in game one of the Joe Nuxhall Classic. First pitch from Marge Schott Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
