CINCINNATI -- The Xavier baseball team dropped the first game of their annual two-game series against crosstown rival Cincinnati 7-5 Tuesday night at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 21-19 on the season.
Senior left hander Ben Thomas fell to 1-2 as he was pegged with the loss in three innings of action. The senior gave up three hits and four earned runs while striking out two Bearcat batters. Cincinnati starter Thomas Gentile earned the win in 4.1 innings while Brian Sand earned the save for UC.
The Bearcats (22-16) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a three-run homer by Justin Riddell. Cincinnati added another run on a fielder's choice to Riddell that brought home Chris Peters.
The Musketeers pulled within one in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of three straight walks to begin the inning. Senior center fielder brought home freshman second baseman Selby Chidemo and senior shortstop Phil Bauer drove in two more runs with a single down the right field line that cut the UC lead to 4-3.
Cincinnati added one more run in the top of the fourth but Xavier managed to keep it within one run with a score in the bottom of the fifth.
XU and UC traded blows with UC scoring again in the top of the six to pull away by two only to have XU cut it back to within one run in the bottom of the seventh. McCambridge drove a single to right field that scored Mark Elwell to put the score at 6-5.
However, the Bearcats pulled away in the top of the eighth with a run on a wild pitch by Nathan Mutsch.
Offensively McCambridge led the way for Xavier as he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
