CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Musketeers struck early with two runs in the first inning but couldn't hold off the Charlotte 49ers as XU dropped a 4-2 decision Sunday afternoon to fall to 16-13 and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10. Charlotte improved to 23-6 overall and 5-1 in the A-10 with the win.
Xavier jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior Ben Thomas hit a one-out double to left center field and was brought home on an error by the Niners' left fielder. Senior Phil Bauer scored on a single by freshman right fielder Brian Bruening that gave the Musketeers the early two-run lead.
Charlotte scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 2-2. The 49ers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with two runs on a Xavier error.
Chad Rothlin earned the win for the 49ers to improve to 3-2 on the season. Markus Kuykendoll was tagged with the loss for the Musketeers in 1.1 innings of action.
Offensively, Thomas led the way for the Musketeers as he went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Xavier will look to get back to its winning ways Tuesday April 5, as they travel down I-75 to face Kentucky. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. from Cliff Hagan Stadium.
