Xavier Suffers 8-7 Setback Against GW Sunday

CINCINNATI -- Xavier fell 8-7 to George Washington in a marathon 12-inning senior day contest at Hayden Field Sunday. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 27-24 overall and 12-9 in the Atlantic 10 while the Colonials improved to 17-35 overall and 7-14 in the A-10.
Sophomore Seth Willoughby was tagged with the loss in three innings of play while GW reliever earned the win in 5 and one-third innings. With the loss, Willoughby fell to 1-5. XU starter Vinny Nittoli pitched four innings while Brian Muransky and Markus Kuykendoll added three and two innings of relief respectively.
GW jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a lead-off solo home run in the top of the first but senior center fielder John McCambridge answered with a lead-off homer of this own in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
The Colonials added two runs in the top of the third but XU answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Xavier's runs came on a two-RBI double by freshman right fielder Brian Bruening that plated senior first baseman Ben Thomas and senior shortstop Phil Bauer.
The Musketeers added a single run in the bottom of the fourth as senior left fielder Matt Keifges reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. McCambridge brought the XU left fielder home with a RBI single that gave the Musketeers a 4-3 lead.
The Colonials broke out to a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh but Xavier tied the game in the home half of the inning as the Musketeers scored three runs via the walk and a hit batsman.
However, the Colonials managed to hit an RBI single in the top of the 12th to earn the win.
The Musketeers will return to action Tuesday as they travel to Miami for a 1 p.m. showdown. Xavier closes out the regular season with a crucial three-game series at Fordham beginning Thursday. For GameTracker of all game please visit GoXavier.com.
