Musketeers Shut Down RedHawks 6-0 In Non-Conference Finale

OXFORD, Ohio -- Senior shortstop Phil Bauer went 2-for-4 with a RBI as the Xavier baseball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 6-0 Tuesday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 28-24 overall while the RedHawks fell to 31-22 with the loss.
Bauer's 2-for-4 outing led the way for the Musketeers offensively. Senior center fielder John McCambridge was 1-for-3 on the day with a walk and sophomore third baseman Patrick Paligraf went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.
Freshman Scott Klever pitched four innings of one-hit baseball to earn his first win of his career. Markus Kuykendoll, Nathan Mutsch, and Alex Vice each added an inning of relief while Josh Murphy pitched two relief innings in the shutout win.
Xavier pulled out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Xavier took advantage of a lead-off single by McCambridge. Bauer drove in the first run of the game when he grounded into a double-play that brought McCambridge home from third base.
Xavier added two more runs in the top of the third inning when freshman Brian Bruening hit a two-RBI single through the middle that scored left fielder Mark Elwell and Bauer. A RBI sacrifice fly by Jake Forrester in the top of the fourth that scored Mitch Elliot extended the Xavier lead to 4-0.
Bauer led off the top of the fifth with a line-drive single to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore second baseman Seth Willoughby extended the Xavier lead to 5-0 with a RBI single to right center field that scored Bauer.
Bauer added another RBI in the visitor's half of the eighth inning with a single past the MU shortstop that brought home Paligraf and gave XU a 6-0 lead.
Xavier will close out the regular season with a crucial three-game series at Atlantic 10 rival Fordham beginning Thursday, May 19, at 4 p.m.
