DAYTON, Ohio -- The Xavier baseball team couldn't get the offense going as the Musketeers fell to Atlantic 10 rival Dayton 6-0 Friday at Time Warner Cable Stadium. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 23-21 and 8-8 in the conference.
Dayton starter Burney Mitchem earned the complete game shutout win giving up just five Musketeer hits. Sophomore left-handed starter Jon Richard fell to 3-4 on the season as he was pegged with the loss in eight innings giving up 11 Flyer hits.
Xavier struggled offensively with Brian Bruening being the lone exception as the freshman right fielder led the way going 2-for-4. Shortstop Brian Blasik led the Flyers as he went 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the bottom of the first inning Chidemo showed off his defensive skills with a diving catch and underhanded throw to Bauer while laying on the ground that helped turn a four-six-three double-play to end the inning.
The Flyers got their bats working in the bottom of the second inning when they scored four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead.
Dayton added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 6-0.
Xavier threatened in the top of the third as senior center fielder John McCambridge singled then stole second and third but was stranded at the end of the inning.
The Musketeers and Flyers continue the series from Time Warner Cable Stadium Saturday at 11 a.m. with the finale scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m.
