ATHENS, Ohio-- The Xavier women's soccer team won its first and only exhibition game of the season with a 2-1 victory over Ohio Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers evened the score then forced an OU own goal in the final 6:45 of play to take the win.
"Today was a tale of two halves," said second-year head coach Woody Sherwood. "I liked the fact that we stayed in the game during the first 45 minutes after being outplayed by a very good OU team. We came out in the second half and we were able to control a lot more of the play. At halftime we told the team to find a way to win this game. Down 1-0 with eight minutes to go, and to win it in regulation was new ground for this program. We were able to experiment with several formations and move some players around today. This week we will continue to improve some weak areas and get ready for No. 8 Ohio State."
Sophomore Mariah Whitakerscored the Musketeers' lone goal in the 84th minute when she chipped in a goal from the top of the penalty box. With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Xavier junior midfielder Leslie Twehues was fouled just inside midfield. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Heap sent the ensuing free kick into the goal mouth where players from both teams challenged for the ball. Heap's shot skipped off the head of an OU defender and went over the outstretched hand of the Bobcat keeper for the game winner.
Ohio jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Toye Famodu got a shot past junior goalkeeper Jennifer Perri. She finished the game with two saves in one half of play while freshman Katie Markesberry earned a pair of saves in the second frame.
The Bobcats set three goalkeepers into the box with Mattie Liston leading the way with two saves in the first half.
Xavier will kick off the 2011 regular season at No. 8 Ohio State Friday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m.
