CINCINNATI -- The Musketeers had their chances but in the end it was Cincinnati that took the 1-0 decision in the annual women's soccer battle between the two cross-town rivals. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 0-2-0 on the season while the Bearcats improved to 1-1-0.
Xavier freshman goalkeeper Katie Markesbery pulled down an impressive 12 saves on the day as the UC offense tested the XU defense with 23 shots. Her counterpart from UC, Christina Utley, earned two saves on the day.
Xavier senior forward Jessica Brooks led the Musketeers with a trio of shots including a chip shot near the end of the game that just missed crossing the goal line. Junior forward Kelsey Phillips was second on the team in shooting with a pair of blasts at the UC goal.
The Bearcats lone goal came in the 23 minute when Emily Hebbeler snuck a shot past Markesbery. But the Musketeer defense rallied to keep the Bearcats out of the box for the rest of the game.
The Musketeers will look to earn their first win of the season Friday, August 26 as they host Miami (Ohio) in the 2011 home opener. Kickoff from the XU Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.
