BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Musketeers picked up a 3-1 win against the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest in their final game of the Western Kentucky Tournament Saturday morning. A double-double performance by Sarah Brown and a career-high day from the service line by Elizabeth Lucich helped move Xavier to 6-3 on the season. With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 2-5 on the season.
Brown, coming off a double-double against LSU, was able to knock in 16 kills and get under 15 digs. Lucich was accurate from the service line, banking in five aces with no errors. The junior also got under 10 digs and has two kills.
Red-shirt freshman Alex Blair notched a career high in kills with 13 for a team-best .458 hitting percentage. Red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith tied her career-high in assisted blocks, with five, while also getting six kills. Freshman Aubree Smith added 50 assists, while also getting four kills and eight digs.
"The hallmark of a good team is to be able to perform well when it is not your best day," head coach Mike Johnson said. "We were out of rhythm in a few phases of our game, but we were able to dig deep when it mattered. Our serving, which had been problematic early [in the match] was the spark plug to our success. Liz Lucich broke the game open and allowed our offense to flow."
XU took the first set after charging on a 6-0 run late in the set to go up 18-13. The Musketeers never looked back and finished the set 25-20. Xavier took the second set 25-23 before losing a tough third set 25-21. XU bounced back in the fourth set, led by Lucich and ended it 25-18.
Xavier will play its last tournament at the University of Michigan September 16-17. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information on Musketeer volleyball.
