COLUMBUS-- The Xavier men's tennis team opened the 2012 dual match season with a 7-0 setback at No. 3 Ohio State Wednesday evening in the state capital.
Senior Richard Canelastoo Ohio State's Peter Kobelt to three sets before falling 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in the second singles slot.
"Overall, I am really pleased with tonight's effort," said XU head coach Eric Toth. "Ohio State has another very good squad and make things awfully tough on you. Our guys certainly could have executed better in spots, but they all really competed well in both singles and doubles. Canelas really played a good match and almost earned a really nice victory. It was great to have Richard back competing with us. We have another test tomorrow at Louisville. Hopefully we can play with the same energy level that we had today. If we can accomplish that we will be competitive again tomorrow."
In doubles play, Canelas and Marc Pretoriusfought hard but fell to Devin McCarthy and Kevin Metka 8-4 in a hard-fought No. 2 doubles match.
XU continues the 2012 season tomorrow as they travel to face Louisville.
