BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Xavier men's tennis team won the doubles point but fell short in singles play in a 5-2 loss against College of Charleston Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla. With the loss, XU fell to 5-7 on the year.
"We had a couple of really good performances today, namely our doubles play and Marc Pretorius at six singles, but unfortunately not enough," said XU head coach Eric Toth. "College of Charleston's guys did a really good job of getting control of the match early in the singles. For our first match outdoors I felt our quality was very good as we pushed a really solid team in their comfort zone. It's going to be important that we keep improving our outdoor play as our season continues so we can be in position to be the team we want to be at the end of the year. "
Pretorius earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles with fellow senior Richard Canelas. He also posted Xavier's lone singles win at No. 6 when he earned a 7-5 6-2 win over the Cougars' Stephen Hardy.
Philip Diaz and Brandon MacDonald posted XU's second doubles win at No. 3.
The Musketeers will remain in Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic Wednesday. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
