PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Musketeers saw their win streak end Wednesday as they fell to Villanova 7-2 in the Snowbird Classic. With the loss, XU fell to 4-8 on the season while Villanova improved to 7-5.
Villanova built a 5-0 lead through five innings but the Musketeers managed to get on the board in the top of the sixth. Seth Dawes reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the Villanova second baseman. Joey Noble brought Dawes in with a RBI single up the middle to cut the VU lead to 5-1. Noble went 2-for-4 at the plate for XU on the day.
Selby Chidemo scored the Musketeers' second run of the day in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Wildcat reliever Kevin MacLachlan. Chidemo's proved to be the last run of the game for XU as VU added two in the bottom of the seventh and held on for the win.
Scott Klever was tagged with the loss for Xavier in four innings of action. He gave up six hits and four runs and fell to 0-2 on the year. Kyle Helisek earned the win for Villanova in six innings of shutout action.
The Musketeers continue play at the Snowbird Classic Thursday as they face Pittsburgh, their second straight foe from the Big East. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
