PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Xavier baseball team's eighth inning rally came up just short as the Musketeers fell to Pittsburgh 6-5 at the Snowbird Classic. With the loss, Xavier fell to 4-9 overall while Pitt improved to 6-5.
Jacob Bodner was pegged with the loss in 2.2 innings of action to fall to 0-1 on the year. Starter Jon Richard pitched six innings and struck out five Panthers in the outing.
Xavier trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth but managed to claw within a run when sophomore Brian Bruening hit a two-RBI single that brought home Derek Hasenbeck and Daniel Rod. However, Pitt closer Tanner Wilt proved up to the task in the ninth inning, earning a save and sealing the Panthers' win.
The Musketeers close out play at the Snowbird Classic Friday with two games. XU faces Akron at 11 a.m. and closes out the road trip with a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Michigan State.
