CINCINNATI -- The Xavier baseball team fell to 26-26 overall and 10-9 in the Atlantic 10 as the Musketeers suffered a 4-2 setback at George Washington Friday afternoon in Arlington, Va.
Sophomore starter Vinny Nittoli fell to 4-5 on the season as he was pegged with the loss in five innings of action.
Xavier tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when the Musketeers took advantage of a lead off single by Brian Bruening. Mark Elwell knocked a sac fly to left to bring the XU sophomore home and gave XU its first run of the game.
Unfortunately for Xavier, the Colonials scored in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to take a one run lead.
Xavier scored again in the top of the eighth when Elwell crossed the plate on bases-loaded ground out by Derek Hasenbeck. However, the Musketeers couldn't get over the hump as GW held on for the 4-2 win.
XU and GW meet again Saturday at 1 p.m.
