OXFORD, Ohio- The Xavier women's soccer team opened its 2012 season at Miami (Ohio) Friday evening, falling to the RedHawks, 3-0. Five different Musketeers recorded shots in the game for Xavier.
"It was a disappointing opener for us," commented head coach Woody Sherwood. "Playing only one exhibition very early probably didn't help us. With that said, Miami as very good today. We really felt we could come in and compete with them but their willingness to beat us to so many balls and their overall pressure made it very difficult to play well. I have a ton of confidence that this team will rebound for Monday night's home opener against Lipscomb."
XU battled MU's stingy defense throughout the contest, tallying five shots in the game compared to Miami's 15. One yellow card was issued during the match to Xavier's junior Taylor Dearbaughafter a tangle with a Miami player near the sideline.
Miami extends its lead in the all-time series to 6-3-2 with the win Friday night.
Sophomore Katie Markesbery(0-1) was charged with the loss for the Musketeers. Markesbery recorded three saves but gave up three goals against. Allison Norenberg (1-0) collected the win for the RedHawks, tallying one save.
Miami's first goal was scored in the 13th minute of the contest by Kelsey Dinges, a low shot that skirted across the grass to find the back-left side of the net. The RedHawks were able to strike again in the 32nd minute as Dinges notched her second goal of the first half.
The RedHawks' final goal of the game came in the second half as Jess Kodiak shook the last defender and went one-on-one with Markesbery, flipping the ball off the top of Markesbery's outstretched fingers in the 61st minute.
The Musketeers return home on Monday, Aug. 20 to play host to Lipscomb at XU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Admission is $5, students are FREE.
