Hoyas get golden goal in 96th minute on breakneck counter play
CINCINNATI - No. 20 Xavier couldn't capitalize on a number of scoring opportunities in the second half and No. 16 Georgetown broke through with a breakneck counter goal in the 96th minute, escaping the XU Soccer Complex with a 1-0 win on Saturday night.
A crowd of nearly 1,000 braved a cold and rainy night, being rewarded with a physical and technical match between two of the BIG EAST's premiere programs.
In the 96th minute, GU's Keegan Rosenberry beat XU goalkeeper Dallas Jaye to the left post – coming off a ball from Brandon Allen – as the Hoyas improved to 6-2-2 (2-0 BIG EAST).
Xavier saw a five-match winning streak snapped in a rematch of the 2014 BIG EAST Semifinals, falling to 7-3 overall (1-1 BIG EAST). The all-time series between Xavier and Georgetown is now knotted at 2-2.
The Musketeers return to action next Saturday, staying at home to continue BIG EAST play against Providence on Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Georgetown ended the night with a 14-10 edge in shots, but XU outshot the Hoyas 6-3 in a dominant second half – just missing on a number of quality looks. Xavier also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Jaye made five saves in goal, but fell to 5-1 overall and saw a four-match shutout streak come to an end. The scoreless stretch had lasted from the second half of the UC match on Sept. 11 and comprised 485:38.
Xavier had the first quality chance of the match, coming 10 minutes in off a corner by Alex Ridsdale, but Josh Grant's header was just over the crossbar.
In the 32nd, Walker Andriot got free in the box and received a perfect centering pass from Majed Osman but laced the shot just wide to the left.
At the break, however, Georgetown held an 8-3 edge in shots and forced Jaye into action four times.
The Musketeers were the clear aggresor in the second half, earning two corners in the first eight minutes.
In the 63rd, Andriot had another quality chance, running toward the top of the box and launching a low shot straight on frame. The ball was deflected by a Hoya defender before skipping high and forcing GU keeper J.T. Marcinkowski to make a leaping save – punching the ball just over the crossbar.
An ensuing corner by Matt Nance was fruitless, but Jalen Brown had a pair of opportunities in the 65th and 67th. Both shots would go high from the top of the box.
In the 76th, Matt Vasquenza hooked up with Andriot for a touch-and-go play as the sophomore forward skipped a ball just wide.
The Hoyas didn't get their first shot until the 79th minute, but nearly scored in the 82nd when a header by Declan McCabe hit the left post before Jaye was able to secure it.
Inside a minute to play in regulation, a foul just outside the box gave Ridsdale a good look on a free kick. But his attempt sailed wide right as time expired.
Xavier had another chance on a free kick in the overtime period, but Andriot's shot was blocked. The deflection off the play gave Georgetown possession as Rosenberry finished on a 4-on-2 counter to end the match.
