La Salle HS product advances to round of 16 at national event
CINCINNATI -Â Incoming freshman golfer Daniel Wetterich made an impressive run at the 2015 U.S. Amateur, advancing to the Round of 16 before dropping out on Thursday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.
Wetterich, vying for a spot in the quarterfinal, was defeated 3 and 1 by 2014 World Amateur champion Jon Rahm -- a senior on the Arizona State men's golf team and the top-ranked amateur in the world.
On Wednesday, Wetterich took down Sam Horsfield (ranked 23rd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings) by a score of 2 and 1 to reach the round of 16. In the first round of match play, Wetterich was a 2 and 1 winner against Corey Pereira (ranked 36th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings).Â
Wetterich advanced to match play with a solid showing of 2-over, including a day two score of 69 (-1), which landed him tied for 36th overall after two rounds.
A La Salle High School graduate, Wetterich qualified for the event with his win at the 106th Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championship back in June at Western Hills Country Club.
