Musketeers unbeaten against Bearcats since 2010, improve to 3-2 overall
CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer took an early 2-0 lead, but had to hang on late to defeat crosstown rival Cincinnati, 2-1, at Gettler Stadium on Friday night.
The Musketeers improved to 3-2 with the win and remained unbeaten against UC since 2010. Under head coach Andy Fleming, XU is 4-0-2 against UC – outscoring the Bearcats 9-3. Cincinnati dropped to 2-3 overall, falling for the third straight match.
Senior Alex Ridsdale opened the scoring for Xavier in the first half. His strike came in the 17th minute, coming off a long volley from Cory Brown. The senior midfielder gathered the ball near side and cut in, beating his defender and launching a low liner to the left side of the net. The tally was Ridsdale's fourth in five matches.
Xavier controlled possession for most of the first half, taking a 6-2 lead in shots into the locker room.
The score remained locked at 1-0, however, until Ian Vicars buried a shot in the 69th minute – getting a pass from Jalen Brown around 12 yards and firing a ball left off a UC defender's foot. It was the first goal of Vicars' career.
In the 75th minute, Alejandro Garcia lofted a header just out of Dallas Jaye's reach for his third goal of the season. The opportunity came off a well-placed cross from Emmanuel Appiah.
XU survived some hairy moments late, as UC outshot the Musketeers 6-3 in the second half. Dallas Jaye was a steady in goal, however, making his debut for XU and recording one save en route to the win.
The Musketeers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15, travelling to No. 2 Notre Dame for an 8:00 p.m. ET match in South Bend, Ind.
