Men's Tennis Rallies Against Morehead State to Secure Home Victory

CINCINNATI – Men's tennis hosted its first match of the 2016 spring season at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club, facing off against competitive rival, Morehead State, January 28th. The Musketeers struggled in the opening doubles sets before displaying a dominant performance in singles competition, giving Xavier the overall win, 5-2.
At the no. 2 spot, in doubles competition, Jeremy Schneider and partner Jack Dykema, were the lone pair to earn their first win of the season by defeating Morehead States tandem, Ognjen Sunjevaric and Enrique Samudio, 6-3. Unfortunately, this win wasn't enough as the Musketeers fell in their two other sets giving Morehead State momentum and the doubles point.
This momentum didn't last long, however, as the Musketeers tightened their rackets and rallied in singles competition. Five big wins at the no. 1,5,4,3, and 6 spots pushed Xavier past the Eagles and gave the team its first win of the spring season.
"We knew we would have to fight back after losing the doubles point", Matt Bishop stated, "but we have a great group of guys who bring it everyday in their individual matches, so we knew we could do it. I think this win was definitely a character test for us, especially with our last match being against OSU a few weeks back. It felt good to get the win and see the energy spewing from the guys after it."
The men's tennis team will travel to Greenville, North Carolina for its next match against East Carolina, February 5th. Dual match play will begin at 2 PM. Be sure to check GoXavier.com for more news updates on the men's tennis team!
