Win Streak Snapped, Musketeers Drop First BIG EAST Contest

Creighton defeats Xavier, 74-47, on Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena
OMAHA, Neb. - Xavier women's basketball entered Friday night's contest at Creighton on a seven-game win streak, the longest active streak in the BIG EAST. The Bluejays held the Musketeers to a season-low .291 field-goal percentage, while hitting 55.4 percent of their shot attempts to defeat Xavier, 74-47, at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Musketeers moved to 12-3 (3-1 BIG EAST) on the year, while Creighton improved to 8-9 (2-3 BIG EAST).
Creighton was 5-for-7 from the floor to open the contest as the Bluejays took an early 12-2 lead. Creighton led by as many as 16, 34-18, late in the first half before back-to-back free throws by Briana Glover made the halftime score, 34-20.
The Bluejays hit 48.3 percent of their shot attempts in the first half, while going 6-for-10 from behind the arc. Xavier was held to a .267 field-goal percentage in the first half, the team's lowest field-goal percentage in the first half this season.
Xavier used a 9-5 run to open the second half to close its deficit to 10, 39-29, but the Bluejays continued their hot shooting as they hit 64.3 percent of their shot attempts in the third quarter. Creighton finished the half hitting 63 percent of its shot attempts to pull away for the 27-point victory.
Leah Schaefer led the Musketeers with eight points on 4-for-6 shooting. Maddison Blackwell added six points, while Aliyah Zantt added five.
Xavier was 14-for-18 from the foul line on the night and Creighton was 4-for-5. Creighton hit 50 percent (8-for-16) of its three pointers, while the Musketeers were 1-for-5.
Creighton held a 40-28 advantage on the glass, paced by Audrey Faber and Sydney Lamberty who both had six. Jenna Crittendon and Raeshaun Gaffney each had five to lead the Musketeers.
Faber scored a game-high 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting with three 3-pointers. MC McGrory added 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
Xavier concludes a three-game BIG EAST road trip at Providence on Sunday, Jan. 10. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. with the game being aired on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
