Musketeers drop first BIG EAST match of season in overtime
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Majed Osman's 31st minute penalty kick gave No. RV/23 Xavier men's soccer an early lead, but homestanding Providence equalized on a PK of its own before winning on a 99th minute golden goal by Danny Griffin on Saturday at Anderson Stadium.
With the setback, the Musketeers drop to 4-3-2 (2-1 BIG EAST).
Providence improves to 5-5 (1-2 BIG EAST), snapping a three-match losing streak and getting its first league win.
• 31' | Xavier | Majed Osman gave XU a 1-0 lead with a penalty kick score. It was his second goal of the season.
• 42' | Providence | Julian Gressel equalized for the Friars, burying a penalty kick of his own to make it 1-1.
• 99' | Providence | Danny Griffin played a one-timer to the left corner off a cross from Braden Kline, giving Providence the golden goal win.
• The Musketeers saw a two-match, 255-minute shutout streak snapped in the 42nd minute.
• XU was outshot 23-14 and 11-7 in shots on goal. PC also held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
