Women's Basketball Picks Up Season-Opening Win Over Tennessee State

Xavier played in the first game of the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball opened its season Saturday at the Lauren Hill Tip-off Classic with a 63-54 win over Tennessee State.
Participating teams included Xavier, Tennessee State, Mount St. Joseph and Hiram College. Before the game, kids were invited to participate in the 'Bounce for a Cure' - dribbling through campus and ending with a 'Layup4Lauren' on the Cintas Center plaza.
The Musketeers are now 17-0 in home openers at Cintas Center dating back to the 2000-01 season. This was the first match-up between Xavier and Tennessee State, giving the Musketeers a 1-0 record against the Lady Tigers.

• Marquia Turner had a career-high 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting with three, 3-pointers. She also added four rebounds and three assists.Â
Xavier held a 38-35 advantage on the glass with 16 offensive rebounds. Leah Schaefer led the Musketeers with 10 - her fifth career game with 10 or more rebounds.Â
• Xavier shot 42.3 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three-point range.
• Marquia Turner and Kindell Fincher scored in double figures, making this the seventh time in both of their careers for double-figure scoring.Â
• Raeshaun Gaffney scored a game-high 18 points on 4-for-9 shooting. The senior guard was also 9-for-10 from the foul line.
Xavier forced 15 turnovers, turning the miscues into 20 points.

• Anniina Äijänen led the team in rebounding with three rebounds, including one offensive board.Â
• Xaiver ended the first quarter tied with Tennessee State, 16-16.
• The Musketeers had a 41.2 shooting percentage, completing going 7-for-17 to end the first quarter. Â

• Xavier fell to a four point Tennessee State lead, but a 10 second back-court violation on Tennessee State shifted the momentum. Imani Partlow scored four points down the stretch and Maddison Blackwell added four rebounds as Xavier went into the half down by three, 33-30.

• Xavier ended the quarter on a 15-4 run with eight points coming from Raeshaun Gaffney, helping the Musketeers regain the lead, 50-43. The Musketeers outscored the Tigers, 20-10, in the frame.

• Xavier took its first double-figure lead of the game, 53-43, on a Marquia Turner three pointer. The Musketeers led by as many as 13, 63-53, with 1:42 left in the game.

• XU returns to the court on Friday Nov. 18 against Southeast Missouri State at 12 p.m.
