Musketeers return to action next weekend for a three-game set at Mercer
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Blaine Griffiths plated a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice, but Xavier baseball couldn't get much more going on Sunday in a 5-1 loss at Arizona State.
The Musketeers dropped to 0-4 with the setback, as the Sun Devils clinched a weekend sweep with another well-pitched game.
ASU starter Reagan Todd tossed 5.1 innings of three hit ball to earn the win.
• Xavier collected just four hits total in the game and was held to two-or-fewer runs for a fourth straight game.
• Blaine Griffiths slapped into a fielder's choice in the seventh, delivering Xavier's lone run as a pinch-hitter.
• Matt Fallon (1-for-5), Daniel Rizzie (1-for-3), Ethan Schmidt (1-for-4) and Andre Jernigan (1-for-3) collected hits.
• Nate Soria, who had reached in each of the first three games of the series, went 0-for-4 and saw a 35-game streak of reaching base snapped.
• Southpaw Trent Astle lasted 4.2 innings in his first start of the season, giving up nine hits and four earned runs to go with a strikeout.
• Sophomore Garrett Schilling was effective in relief, tossing three innings on one-run ball. The righty from Clawson, Mich. surrendered four hits and struck out one.
• Brad Kirschner made his season debut in relief of Schilling, collecting a strikeout to end the ASU eighth.
SEVENTH INNING: Will LaRue was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second when Andre Jernigan was plunked as well. Sam Flamini followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving LaRue and Jernigan over. Blaine Griffiths then slapped a grounder to first to score LaRue. Fallon was retired on strikes to end the threat.
• The Musketeers will travel to Macon, Ga. for their next weekend series, beginning a three-game set on Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
