Bounce Back Victory for Women’s Tennis Over Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The women's tennis team ended the weekend in South Carolina with a bounce-back win over Furman, 5-2.

After losing the doubles point, five of the six singles matches belonged to the Musketeers allowing them to secure the victory and go 1-1 on the weekend.

Sydney Liggins defeated Ansley Speaks, 7-5, 6-0, to give Xavier its first point in the match and put the Musketeers within one point of the Paladins.

Alex Brinker beat Karlee Bryde, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 4 singles position to tie the match at 2-2.

Sophia Abelson downed Harper Caswell, 7-5, 6-4, to go undefeated in singles play on the weekend, and give Xavier its first lead of the match, 3-2.

Cristina Di Lorenzo and Lauren Ghidotti rounded up singles play by winning both of their matches, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7), respectively.

"Good team win today," said head coach Doug Matthews. "We lost a tough doubles point and then responded well in singles. We won the big points and competed great. We are definitely coming together as a team and need to keep working to get better."

Xavier is now 6-4 on the season and will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26 at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club against Northern Kentucky. First serve set for 6 p.m.
