Dan Rizzie's solo homer in the third the difference as XU improves to 3-3 in league play

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Dan Rizzie swatted an opposite field solo home run and Xavier baseball got some clutch relief to make the run stand up as the Musketeers took their series finale against St. John's, 1-0, on Sunday at Hayden Field.

With the win, XU improves to 16-26 (3-3 BIG EAST) and eclipses last season's win total with 15 games left on the schedule. SJU drops to 20-16-1 (5-4 BIG EAST).

XU AT THE PLATE

· Dan Rizzie (1-for-4, R, HR, RBI) left the yard in the third, smashing a solo shot to right field for his eighth homer of the year. It was also the senior catcher's third in his last two games.
· Xavier hit seven homers over the last two games as a team, including three by Rizzie. The Musketeers have homered in 17 of their last 27 games, tallying 35 longballs in that span.
· Xavier also got hits from Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-4), Andre Jernigan (1-for-4), Nate Soria (1-for-3), Ethan Schmidt (1-for-3, BB) and Matt Fallon (1-for-1, 2 BB).

XU ON THE MOUND

· Matt Kent (1-1) was effective, pitching out of several jams and keeping St. John's off the scoreboard over 5.1 innings. The freshman struck out three and picked up his first career win.
· Trey Schramm entered with two on and one out in the sixth, allowing a single but then working out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the 1-0 lead.
· Garrett Schilling relieved Schramm with one out in the seventh, getting a second out before intentionally walking the bases loaded. With two out, Schilling coaxed a pop up to strand three more Red Storm runners. The sophomore righty then got out of another two on, one out jam getting a double play ball to end the game.
· The save was Schilling's eighth of the season, moving him into a tie for sixth in XU single season history.
· XU walked nine batters, but stranded 12 Red Storm baserunners throughout the game.

HOW XU SCORED

THIRD INNING: Dan Rizzie smacked a leadoff homer to right field, giving Xavier a 1-0 lead.
