Eight Musketeers registered hits; Lowther struck out seven in six complete
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Xavier took the first of a three-game series at Seton Hall, topping the Pirates 5-3 on Friday evening for its sixth straight win.
XU improves to 20-26 overall and 7-3 BIG EAST. Xavier's six-game winning streak is also its longest since taking seven straight from April 10-19, 2013.
Seton Hall moved to 31-15 overall and 5-5 in league play.
· Andre Jernigan finished the day with a pair of hits, a walk and scored a run to lead the way offensively for the Musketeers.
· Nate Soria picked up a pair of hits on the day, finishing 2-of-5 at the plate.
· Dan Rizzie (1-of-5) extended his hitting streak to seven games and picked up an RBI.
· Chris Givin, Rylan Bannon, Joe Gellenbeck and Matt Fallon each posted a hit and picked up an RBI on the evening.
- Zac Lowther pitched six complete innings, giving up earned two runs on four hits. Lowther finished the day with seven strikeouts, his most since striking out seven at Illinois State on April 1.
- Trey Schramm pitched an inning of relief, facing five batters, allowing one hit and walking one while holding the Pirates scoreless in the seventh.
- Taylor Williams pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and walking one through five batters.
- Garrett Schilling closed out the game, with no hits allowed and one walk as one unearned run scored.
SECOND INNING: Andre Jernigan led the inning off with a double, and moved to third on a groundout for Nate Soria. Chris Givin doubled to bring in Jernigan for the first run of the game. A groundout for Will LaRue advanced Givin to third and David Morton singled to right to bring Larue in to put Xavier up 2-0
FIFTH INNING: After dropped third strike, Matt Fallon reached on a throwing error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rylan Bannon. A passed ball moved Fallon to third before Dan Rizzie brought him home.
EIGHTH INNING: Three walks loaded the bases for Fallon, who singled to center to bring in Givin for the insurance run. Bannon followed with a bases-loaded walk to put Xavier up 5-2.
· Xavier and Seton Hall return to the field tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, for a double-header. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
