Returning senior lefty allowed just one hit in last outing, lowering his summer ERA to 1.61
HOLYOKE, Mass. – Returning senior starter Trent Astle was named Collegiate Summer Baseball National Pitcher of the Week and New England Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday after tossing a gem in his last outing for the Valley Blue Sox.
The lefty allowed just one baserunner, by way of an infield hit, and struck out eight in six shutout innings last Friday during the Blue Sox' 5-1 win over the North Adams SteepleCats.
Astle's outing dropped his summer ERA to a team-best 1.61, which ranks fifth in the NECBL.
During his three years with the Musketeers, Astle has had several big moments – including a three-hit shutout in the 2014 BIG EAST Championship game and an All-BIG EAST Second Team honor in 2015, leading XU in starts, innings and strikeouts.
After struggling in the non-conference, Astle was one of Xavier's best pitchers in BIG EAST play last season. As a junior, he posted a 3-0 record with a 2.82 ERA in 22.1 innings against league competition.
He was the winning pitcher for XU in a 9-0 victory over Villanova on May 21, which clinched the regular season title for Xavier. He also had another big moment in the league tournament, beating Creighton on May 27 to put the Musketeers back in the BIG EAST Championship game for a second time in three years.
