Dewey Scores a Pair To Lead Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win at Dayton
09.02.16 | Women's Soccer
Win marks first over the Flyers since 2000
DAYTON, Ohio - In a renewal of an old Atlantic 10 rivalry, Xavier women's soccer traveled up I-75 to face University of Dayton, taking the 3-1 win over the Flyers to move to 3-1-1 on the season.
The win, fueled by a pair of second half goals by Samantha Dewey, marks the first time Xavier has topped Dayton in women's soccer since 2000, breaking a streak of 14 straight losses to the Flyers in the first official match between the two programs since Xavier joined the BIG EAST in 2013. The win marks the first win at Dayton since 1998 when Xavier topped the Flyers on penalty kicks in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship game, earning the program's first berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute after Maddie Tierney served a free kick from 23 yards out to the left side of the box. Ellie Eckerle found the corner of the net for her first goal of the season and second of her Xavier career.
The Musketeers extended the lead to two in the 60th minute when Samantha Dewey got behind a pair of defenders and worked the ball into the 18 yard box. Dewey shot from the middle to the left side for her second goal of the season.
After Dayton cut the lead down to one, 2-1, in the 63rd minute, Xavier held on to the one goal advantage until the 82nd minute when Dewey struck for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Eckerle fed the ball to Dewey at the top of the box, dropping the ball into the right side of the net for the insurance goal.
Dewey's four shots, including three on-goal, led the way for the Musketeers. Two of Kenadie Carlson's three shots were narrow misses, going just wide of the net as Carlson created a pair of good looks on breakaways as the Musketeers were looking for the insurance goal late in the second half.
Xavier held the Flyers scoreless for over 63 minutes, before UD's Meghan Blank scored off a pass from the endline. Rachel Piccus finished with six saves to keep the Musketeers ahead and pick up her third win of the season.
Eckerle and Carly Alfano each played a full 90 minutes on the backline for the Musketeers, helping keep the the Flyer attack under control.
"We debated whether we tell the team that we haven't won in 16 years, if that would work against them. But I think with this group knows they're on the verge of something special so we told them that. We had a good week of training come off a really tough weekend. Good week of training despite a lot of adversity this week... we're up at 6:30 in the morning training off site due to our field being flooded and they rose to that challenge. In the second half they rose to another challenge after Maddie Tierney, arguably one of our top two or three players was out of the game for that second half. We had some kids step up for us."
"Beating Dayton as a Xavier grad...to do that here, in Coach Tucker's last year at Dayton is pretty special. To him in his career, he's been unbelievable and this program will be still great. This year, I'm sure, they have great things in store for them in the A10. Give Dayton credit, they really played well, we were just fortunate to show up today in a special way."
Xavier's next match against Northern Kentucky University, originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th has been moved to NKU Soccer Stadium on the campus of NKU in Highland Heights, Ky., due to recent flooding at XU Soccer Complex.
NKU will assume the role of home team for the match, which will now be played at 7:00 p.m. instead of the previously scheduled 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 for general admission and $3.00 for children ages 6-18 as well as students with a valid ID.
