MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Xavier men's golf team travels to South Carolina today for the Golfweek Program Challenge in Myrtle Beach. The three-day event will be played at the True Blue Golf Course, which will be playing 7,126 yards and par 72.
The fourteen-team tournament field features Boston College, Campbell, Elon, Gardner-Webb, Houston Baptist, Jacksonville, James Madison, Morehead State, Radford, Stetson, Tennessee Tech, Valparaiso, Western Carolina and Xavier.
Practice rounds will be played Saturday before the first round Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
Matt Wetterich will lead the Musketeers at the challenge. The senior won qualifying by an impressive nine strokes after six rounds at different courses around the Cincinnati area. Wetterich played in seven tournaments for Xavier last year averaging 78.53 strokes, his best finish being t-17th at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate [223,+10].
Xavier will be looking for players to step up after the departures of Jose Montaño and Daniel Wetterich, the number one and number two players last year.
Wetterich will be joined by two seniors, a sophomore, and a freshmen at True Blue for the men's first tournament of the fall.
Fox Morrissey will be counted on more often as he enters his second year with the program. The senior competed in nine events last year for Xavier averaging 77.15 strokes, his best finish being tied for 22nd at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate [222,+6].
Samuel Buse will also be making the trip. The senior will get an opportunity right away to show what he can do. Buse played in two tournaments last year for Xavier.
Sophomore Eduardo Rivera Nicholls and freshman Hunter Roberts will both be making their first appearance in a Xavier polo this weekend. Rivera, who redshirted last year, will be a key contributor this season as he finished second in qualifying. Roberts is coming off a stellar senior season in high school, leading his team to a golf title for the state of Ohio.
First year head coach Brian McCants will be making his coaching debut this weekend with the Musketeers. McCants comes to Xavier after spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana. He replaces longtime head coach Doug Steiner.
