Women's Soccer Falls, 2-0, Against Duquesne
09.09.16 | Women's Soccer
Dukes took a 2-0 lead in the first half
CINCINNATI – Xavier women's soccer traveled across town to host Duquesne at UC's Gettler Stadium, falling to the Dukes, 2-0, on Friday afternoon. The loss moves the Musketeers to 4-2-1 on the season.
Duquesne score a pair in the first half, getting the first in the sixth minute from Abby Losco. The Dukes added the insurance goal at the 34:55 mark when Ivana Kristic got the ball behind the defense in the box. Duquesne moves to 2-2-1 on the season.
Rachel Piccus started in goal for the Musketeers, facing nine shots by the Dukes and collecting three saves.
Toni Bizzarro made her second appearance at goalkeeper, starting the second half and collecting four saves, including a pair of diving stops to keep the Musketeers within two.
Courtney Kobashigawa and Ellie Eckerle each played over 75 minutes on the Xavier backline.
Much like the NKU game, after going into the halftime break behind, Xavier came out with increased pressure on offense. The Musketeers took six of their nine shots in the second period, with Samantha Dewey's three, including a pair on-frame. Six different Musketeers had attempts, and Xavier forced DU's goalkeeper to make five saves on the day to shutout the XU offense for the first time this season.
"Certainly a disappointing result today against a very good Duquesne team. We knew they were an NCAA-caliber opponent, but for the second time in four days, we weren't as ready as we should have been from the start. This year's going to present some huge challenges for us, having lost our home, our message after the game was we have no other option but to have the intestinal fortitude to deal with the situation we've been put in and make the most of it. There were pieces tonight that were good, but if you put yourself in a 2-0 hole, it becomes challenge. We'll regroup and certainly show up for Youngstown State." - Woody Sherwood
Xavier will now travel to Youngstown State for the first of five-straight road games. The Musketeers take on the Penguins on Sunday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m. The match will be streamed through WatchESPN.
After Youngstown State, Xavier will travel to Ohio and IUPUI before jumping into the BIG EAST slate at DePaul and Providence.
