Senior midfielder/forward led XU with six goals, 20 shots on goal in 2016 season
LOS ANGELES – Xavier men's soccer senior midfielder/forward Jalen Brown was announced as a 2017 MLS Combine participant on Wednesday afternoon, marking the fourth time in five years a Musketeer has been selected for the event. An important audition for some of the best amateur players in the nation, the MLS Combine will be held for a total 66 players in Carson, Calif. from Jan. 7-12.
Brown, an Indianapolis-native and business major, was one of Xavier's top offensive threats throughout his career (2013-16). He recorded several career-bests in 2016, including starts (19), goals (6), assists (3), shots (46) and shots on goal (20). He led the team in goals and ranked second with 15 points, 46 shots and 20 shots on goal. A workhorse up top, Brown ranked fifth on team with 1,524 minutes played.
He also developed a reputation for coming up huge in big moments during his Xavier career, scoring five total game-winners.
During the 2014 season, Brown was instrumental in XU's run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. He supplied a regular season game-winner at No. 15 Marquette in addition to the deciding goal against No. 8 Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals, which sent XU to its first-ever league title match.
In 2015, he buried the game-winner in a historic road win over No. 2 Notre Dame.
Over his career, Brown helped Xavier to 45 wins and was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll multiple times.
After undergoing interviews and physical tests on Saturday, Jan. 7, the participants will be split up into four teams (Team Chaos, Team Control, Team Copa and Team Nemeziz). Those four groups will compete over three matchdays, which will consist of doubleheaders at StubHub Center on Jan. 8, 10 and 12.
All matches will be streamed live on MLSSoccer.com.
In addition to the players, every MLS technical staff will have a presence in Southern California. That includes head coaches, assistant coaches, technical directors and general managers.
The last XU participant in the MLS Combine was 2014 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Eric Osswald, who had a brilliant showcase in January of 2015 and spent time with the USL's Real Monarchs upon graduation. All four XU grads to have participated at the combine have gone on to sign professional contracts, including MLS Draft selections Luke Spencer ('13) and Nick Hagglund ('14).
• Xavier is one of only 14 schools send a player to four of the last five MLS Combines.
