
Samson Sergi, Zach Nelson Take Home BIG EAST Weekly Awards

Sergi named BIG EAST Player of the Week after brace, Nelson earns Freshman of the Week honors following six save performance
NEW YORK – Xavier men's soccer reeled in two BIG EAST weekly honors on Monday after defeating visiting Providence 4-1 on Saturday at XU Soccer Complex. Redshirt sophomore Samson Sergi was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while redshirt freshman Zach Nelson took home the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award.
Sergi's two goals in the opening minutes keyed XU's league win over the Friars, while Nelson tied a career-high with six saves as the Musketeers improved to 6-2-2 (2-1 BIG EAST).
An Ashburn, Va. native, Sergi's brace was the first of his college career. He has now been recognized by the league in three straight weeks, earning BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nods in each of the previous two weeks.
The forward scored in the second minute to give XU a 1-0 lead, tapping in a long volley from Cam Taylor. He then finished from the left side of the box on an assist by Matt Vasquenza in the fourth minute, scoring what was ultimately the game-winner. For the season, Sergi now leads XU and is tied for tops in the league with seven goals on the season.
Nelson, a native of West Linn, Ore., held preseason league favorite Providence to just one goal on a penalty kick on Saturday. He faced a season-high shots, including seven on frame, and tied a career-high with six stops in 90 minutes of action.
The Musketeers return to action on Tuesday night, hosting Detroit to cap non-conference play at 7 p.m. at XU Soccer Complex.
